Toshiaki Kanamaru was born in Tokyo in 1973. In young age he was influenced by
jazz, rock and fusion that his father was listening.
In 1991 he started to play the guitar, first as a street performer, and
switched to the bass guitar three years later.
He played as a bassist in a female vocal rock band called "Rock Candy"
in the Tokyo suburbs. In 1994 he started to play the Chapman Stick and joined the
progressive band "Sonic Arts". A year after he formed a techno unit "Week End Work" and appeared in clubs
of Tokyo area. Moreover, he participated in a progressive trio band "Tougenkyou".
During music sessions of various genres, he built the idea of his solo performance
At that time he also studied music theory with Katsu, one of the top
stickists in Japan.
In 2004 Toshiaki Kanamaru started his solo work. In this work, he expressed the unique world of music with the elements of jazz and New
Age. He appeared with energetic street performances and gigs.
His simple and delicate tones and musical tunes that leave warmth in one's heart attracted listeners and gain popularity among them.
Kanamaru collaborates with artists from various fields, such as stage music or performances in which Kanamaru plays his misic while a painter creates his works in real time.
His first solo album "Get on the Stick" has been released at a
Japanese independent label "Roots Records" in July, 2005.
It was favorably presented on radio programs and music magazines.
In addition to his recordings and performances, Kanamaru also instructs Stick players in Japan.
At present, he is preparing for release his second album, while challenging the
music market in Japan together with the Neo Stick Band "Nagareyama".
