How to learn the Stick

Even though there are no Stick classes in music colleges or conservatories yet, that does not mean that there are no sources for studying how to play the Stick. Here are some that I highly recommend:

Stick Instructional Materials

Video lessons by Bob Culbertson: three VHS tapes by levels - beginners, intermediate and advanced. Studying with Bob's video tapes is a lot of fun! You will feel like you are really sitting in the classroom together with Bob, taking a private lesson from him. The lessons are very well organized by topics. Bob explains the material with a lot of patience and illustrates it perfectly by playing the Stick together with a drum player. The VHS's can be ordered at the Stick Enterprises http://www.stick.com/instruction/videos/lessonsonstick/
The lessons will be available in DVD soon!

Free Hands by the Stick inventor Emmett Chapman - a book of chords, scales, Stick techniques and songs arrangements for the Stick of Classic tuning. The Bible of the Stick players! You can order the book and see a sample page on the Stick Enterprices Website http://www.stick.com/instruction/books/freehands/

Stick Book Volume 1 by Greg Howard with the audio CD. An excellent book for Baritone Melody, Matched Reciprocal and Classic tuning. Can be ordered at the Stick Enterprises http://www.stick.com/instruction/books/stickbook/

The Sticktionary by Chris Crain: chord diagram book for all types of Sticks with the melody side tuned in 4th and the bass side tuned in inverted 5th. Can be ordered at Stick Enterprises http://www.stick.com/instruction/books/sticktionary/ You can also see pages and extracts from the Sticktionary on Chris Crain's Website http://www.chriscrain.com/

Exercises of Virtuosity for the Chapman Stick and classical pieces transcriptions for the Chapman Stick by Andre Pelat. You can order the materials on Andre Pelat's Website http://www.andrepelat.com/ Click the link Products.
